Revisiting the morphological species groups of West-Palearctic Aphaenogaster ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) under a phylogenetic perspective: toward an evolutionary classification

چکیده

The West-Palearctic region is a diversity hotspot for the ant genus Aphaenogaster . Species in this are characterized by high morphological variation, which has led to their subdivisioninto different infrageneric groups. very first classification three subgenera, dated 1915, was gradually replaced eight species-groups. To probe evolutionary consistency of these species-groups, we sequenced 46 species from all species-groups and biogeographic sectors region, using one mitochondrial (COI) six nuclear markers (EPICs), interpreted results integrating qualitative morphology. Our demonstrate non-monophyly formerly recognized subgenera except crocea group. We use phylogeny characters propose new monophyletic ( , gibbosa graeca pallida sardoa subterranea ). (formerly testaceopilosa ) groups attain status reassigning few taxa. group be considered exclusively Western-Mediterranean until further assessments similar Eastern species. established including former members splendida groups, while polyphyletic cecconii obsidiana dismissed. Notably, not part tropical Deromyrma clade as previously thought, at least two independent clades require investigation composed both suggesting repeated convergences based on ecological adaptations. Finally, A. cardenai confirmed significantly divergent lineage. In addition, moved genera: Messor asmaae (Sharaf, 2018) comb. nov., isekram (Bernard, 1977) Pheidole sarae nov. Further studies should address relationships between recovered study.

Subterranean Ants: The Case of Aphaenogaster cardenai (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Recently, a series of systematized studies of the Milieu Souterrain Superficiel (MSS) are being carried in several enclaves of the Iberian Peninsula, which have entailed the finding of the enigmatic ant Aphaenogaster cardenai Espadaler, 1981, hitherto considered as hypogean, in a mountain range far away from its known distribution area. Its ecological role and its possible area of distribution ...

A phylogenetic perspective on the association between ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and black yeasts (Ascomycota: Chaetothyriales).

The frequency and the geographical extent of symbiotic associations between ants and fungi of the order Chaetothyriales have been highlighted only recently. Using a phylogenetic approach based on seven molecular markers, we showed that ant-associated Chaetothyriales are scattered through the phylogeny of this order. There was no clustering according to geographical origin or to the taxonomy of ...

Morphological phylogeny of army ants and other dorylomorphs (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The dorylomorph group of ants comprises the three subfamilies of army ants (Aenictinae, Dorylinae, Ecitoninae) together with the subfamilies Aenictogitoninae, Cerapachyinae, and Leptanilloidinae. We describe new morphological characters and synthesize data from the literature in order to present the first hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among all dorylomorph genera. These data include ...

Common names for Australian ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Most insects do not have common names, and this is a significant barrier to public interest in them, and to their study by non-specialists. This holds for even highly familiar insect groups such as ants. Here, I propose common names for all major native Australian ant genera and species-groups, as well as for many of the most abundant and distinctive species. Sixty-two genera, 142 species-group...

A preliminary checklist of the ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Andorra

Within the last decade, checklists of the ant fauna of several European countries have been published or updated. Nevertheless, no ant checklists have hitherto been published for the principality of Andorra, a small landlocked country located in the eastern part of the Pyrenees. This work presents a critical list of the ant species of Andorra based on a review of the literature and on the biolo...
